Educational platform

ILIAS (Integrated Learning, Information and Work System) is a learning management system (LMS) and is used to organize and provide courses, teaching materials and activities online. With Ilias, lecturers can create their courses online, upload files, create tests and assignments and track participants’ performance. Participants in turn have access to all course materials and activities and can track their progress and performance online. Ilias also offers features such as discussion forums, chat and messaging functions to encourage communication and collaboration within the course.

8 reasons for ILIAS

Versatility: Of course you can also use ILIAS to make files available in a data protection-friendly way – but why limit yourself to that? Course management, learning modules, media players, tests and e-exams, portfolios, surveys, wikis and blogs are available immediately after installation and make ILIAS an e-learning solution “from a single source”. ILIAS can not only play content, but also makes creating it child’s play thanks to the built-in editor.

Ownership: Download ILIAS free of charge and install it on your own servers. The system then runs completely in the Internet browser. No additional software is required – neither for teaching staff nor for students. As an ILIAS user, you never have to pay license fees. You can view and modify the source code. Special requirements can be customized for you. Or you can participate in the community to incorporate your ideas into ILIAS in the long term.

Customization: Countless people use ILIAS every day without knowing it. This is because the appearance of the learning platform is easily adaptable to your existing C.I.. In this way, ILIAS fits seamlessly into the overall web presence of your institution. Standardized stylesheets for learning modules can also be offered. Every author in your institution can then use these for their own content. However, customizability is not limited to the interface: Functions and tools can be activated or deactivated globally or for individual roles.

Collaboration: Depending on the usage scenario, it can be helpful to encourage exchange between learners and promote group work. So-called “learning communities” are easy to implement in ILIAS. Users can then get in touch with each other, set up working groups independently and use all the released ILIAS tools. Personal profiles, “who’s online” displays, mail, chats and forums help with communication.

Community: In development since 1998, ILIAS is now supported by a large number of service providers and more than 70 institutional members in the ILIAS open source E-Learning e.V. association. There are thousands of active ILIAS installations worldwide with millions of users: from German-speaking countries to Italy, the USA, Canada, Japan and Angola. Every year, hundreds of ILIAS users meet in person at our conferences and in user groups. This enables them to find helpful solutions even for tricky questions and complex requirements.

Data security: Information security and data protection have the highest priority in our community. The entire system is GDPR-compliant. This is because no data flows out of ILIAS to third parties – not even to the ILIAS Association or the developers involved. You can use the learning platform securely on your own servers and thus retain control. Nevertheless, you can open parts of ILIAS to external parties as required.

Standards compliance: Thanks to the support of all important industry standards, ILIAS is the perfect team player in your e-learning scenario: xAPI/cmi5, SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 learning modules. LOM metadata, QTI tests and exams. XML, CSV and Excel exports of your data. LTI for integrating external applications – or for offering ILIAS content on third-party systems. The topic of accessibility is also very important for ILIAS. The system is subject to annual BITV tests.

Security: It is now well known that open software also means secure software. Only if the source code can be viewed can it be prevented with certainty that malicious code is executed unnoticed on a system. This is why open source software is often used in security-critical environments today. As early as 2008, ILIAS was certified by NATO to be used on the defense alliance’s protected intranet for the use and distribution of sensitive learning content and documents.

Digital Sovereignty

Proprietary software works like a black box: As a customer, you don’t know what the code looks like and where the journey is heading in terms of further development. To make matters worse, it often remains unclear what happens to your data – and which stakeholders have access to it and under what conditions.

With ILIAS, you retain complete control over your data – and have a decisive say in the further development of the software. ILIAS has been published as open source software since 2000, making it one of the pioneers in e-learning. The GPL license guarantees users access to the program code and the possibility of further development.
